The Plateau State Directorate of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), on Wednesday, September 10, joined the global community in marking World Suicide Prevention Day, with an important reminder that suicide is preventable and that collective action can save lives.
In a message to mark the day, the State Director of the NOA, Mrs. Kaneng Tabitha Pam-Hworo, said every year, more than 720,000 people worldwide die by suicide which each loss leaving behind families, friends and communities who struggle with the pain.
‘NOA calls on Nigerians to work together to break the stigma, challenge harmful myths and encourage open and compassionate conversations about mental health,’ she said.
“As part of this year’s message, NOA urges citizens to check in regularly on family, friends and neighbors. Sometimes a simple question can make a difference.
‘Listen with patience and without judgment. Encourage those who are struggling to seek professional help from doctors, counselors, or hotlines.
“Share information on where help and support can be found. Choose words that heal. Kindness and care can bring hope to someone in despair.
“World Suicide Prevention Day is not only a time of remembrance but also a moment to affirm hope. NOA calls on all citizens to stand together against stigma and to show that every life matters. NOA Cares,” she added.
