The political landscape in Plateau State has been thrown into mourning as result of the demise of Prof. Janet Punyit Plang, the wife of the lawmaker representing Plateau Central senatorial district in the National Assembly, Senator Diket Plang, who passed on in the early hours of Monday.

Until her death at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, the deceased was a Professor of Gender Studies and Gerontology of the University of Jos.

Following her sad demise following a brief illness, condolence messages have been pouring in for her bereaved husband who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Labour, Employment and Productivity.

The Publicity Secretary of the state chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC), Shittu Bamaiyi, in a condolence message to Sen. Plang, described the death of Prof. Janet as not only shocking but a tragedy that has befallen not only the immediate family but the state as a whole.

Shittu stated that the deceased was not only a support system for her husband but a pillar of the APC family in the state who stood solidly behind her husband during the 2023 election and the court proceedings that were to follow leading up to the eventual victory of Sen. Plang.

In the statement, Bamaiyi said APC was deeply saddened, shocked and devastated over the sudden demise of Professor Janet.

“Professor Janet’s death is not only a colossal lost to the Senator Plang’s family, but a devastating shock to the entire people of Plateau State,” Shittu said.

He described the late Professor as a virtuous, humble, humane woman who was an academia per excellence who had impacted positively the lives of many people, particularly, the youth.

“It is indeed painful, that a woman of such virtues and letters could be called to glory at the time, when more of her contributions to national development were most needed.

“There is no doubt that Senator Plang and members of his family are in an unimaginable grief because the deceased was not only a mother, but the Pillar of the Plangs,” he added.
