Rainstorm destroy Shendam community, render residents homeless

The rainstorm left at least 50 houses including homes, schools, worship centers and food silos destroyed

Residents of Menkaat community in Shimankar district of Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State have been rendered homeless after a rainstorm destroyed their homes, properties and farmlands.

One of the displaced resident of the community, Lawrence Longwalk, who spoke on the devastating incident, said at least, 50 houses including homes, schools, worship centers and food silos were destroyed by the rainstorm which occured in the early hours of Sunday, wreaked havoc in the community.

Longwalk said the unexpected storm was accompanied by heavy rain that lasted several hours till the early hours of Sunday, leaving in its wake untold destruction.

Longwalk narrated that houses had their roofs blown off, while several buildings collapsed and called on the local government, state government and humanitarian agencies to come to their aid.

“Our people have been hit seriously by a rainstorm. It happened early hour of Sunday morning.

“Over 50 houses were destroyed including homes, schools, churches, mosques and food silos. Our farmlands have also been washed away by the flood and from the level of damage, the people need urgent help,” he said.
