Another Court Order: Mutfwang’s defection thickens

Recall that an appeal court in 2023 had sacked Governor Mutfwang from office citing lack of State Party constituted structure to have produced him as a flag bearer.

To avoid a repeat of the 2023 governorship election in Plateau State that almost cost Governor Caleb Mutfwang his seat if not for the intervention of the Supreme Court, it is becoming clearer that Mutfwang might exit the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in no distant time.

Waking up on Tuesday to another Court Order from the Federal High Court in Abuja, stopping the PDP from going ahead with its planned National Convention scheduled in Ibadan Oyo State, on November 15, 2025, Mutfwang will only remain in the party at his own peril.

Recall that an appeal court in 2023 had sacked Governor Mutfwang from office citing lack of State Party constituted structure to have produced him as a flag bearer.

The Supreme court however came to the rescue, but other elected political office winners like the State House of Assembly members could not survive the court hammer.

“It will be suicidal to walk through the same lane that brought tears twice, a group under the aegis of Plateau Youths For Progressive Change (PYPC)”, said Chairman of the group, Ezra Yakubu.

In a statement, Yakubu said it is now up to Governor Mutfwang to decide which party to join, adding that all available political parties are open to the Governor.

According to him: “President Bola Tinubu wants him to join the APC, ADC, SDP all wants him to come. As a working governor, the option is open for him to move to any political party that gives him the platform to contest for the 2027 election.

“The people of Plateau have assured him that wherever he goes, they will go with him. We will stand by him because he has delivered the dividends of democracy.

“From road infrastructure to street lights to education, healthcare, agriculture, construction of markets, scholarship, payment of pension arrears, water, etc.

“Mutfwang has distinguished himself as one of the best governors the State has ever produced in just 2 and half years”, the group said.

Recall that in the latest court ruling that was delivered by Justice Peter Lifu, he barred the party from proceeding with the convention that was billed to hold in Ibadan, Oyo state, on November 15 and 16.

The restraining order followed a suit that was lodged before the court by a former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido.

More so, the court barred the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from supervising, monitoring, or recognizing the outcome of the scheduled convention where PDP intended to elect its national officers.

Lamido, who is a foundation member of the PDP, approached the court after he was denied the opportunity to purchase a nomination form to contest for the position of National Chairman of the party.

The plaintiff alleged that the party arbitrarily denied him the right to participate at the planned national convention.
