Six killed, scores injured in fresh attack in Barkin Ladi

Not less than six people were reportedly killed in a fresh attack carried out by suspected Fulani militia on Monday at Marit and Gashish communities in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Some residents who confirmed the attacks said the gunmen stormed the communities in the night while the natives were sleeping and began attacking the people.

The Chairman of Barkin Ladi local government area, Hon. Stephen Pwajok Gyang, who also confirmed the attack in a statement through his press secretary, Mercy Yop Chuwang, said the victims who died had been given mass burial on Monday.

The statement stated that Gyang condemned the attacks and called for proactive measures to prevent further bloodshed in the area and the local government at large.

“During a visit to those injured in the attack at the Barkin Ladi General Hospital, Hon. Pwajok expressed profound sadness and disappointment over the resurgence of violence in the area especially when the local government administration is working tirelessly to promote peace and stability,” the statement said.

It added that the chairman acknowledged the efforts of local vigilantes and security agencies in maintaining law and order, while urging them to be more proactive and vigilant in preventing further attacks.

“He emphasized that the cycle of violence must be brought to an end and called on all relevant stakeholders, including security agencies, community leaders, and residents, to join hands in promoting peace and security in Barkin Ladi.

“The council boss prayed for God’s comfort and peace for the affected families and communities, while admonishing healthcare personnel to urgently attend to the survivors’ health needs.

The fresh attack is coming few weeks after similar attacks were launched by suspected Fulani militias on communities in Bokkos and Bassa local councils between March and April 2025, where over a 150 people, including women and children, were killed.
