Plateau State Commissioner For Women Affairs Condemns Barbaric Domestic Violence Incident

In a press conference held at the Joseph Gomwalk Secretariat in Jos, Plateau State, Honorable Caroline Panglang Dafur, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, expressed profound condemnation for the recent heinous act of domestic violence perpetrated against Mrs. Hauwa Shagari by her husband, a police officer.

The incident, which occurred on April 29th, 2024, saw Mrs. Shagari’s husband, Mr. Ibrahim Shagari, brutally severing her hand, despite her being heavily pregnant and a mother of three. Commissioner Dafur, visibly distressed, emphasized the unacceptable nature of such violence, especially when committed by someone entrusted with protecting citizens.

Hon. Dafur underscored the pervasive nature of gender-based violence in society, urging a collective effort to combat it. She reassured the victim and her family of the government’s unwavering support in seeking justice and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable.

The Commissioner highlighted ongoing efforts by the Plateau State Government to sensitize the populace about Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) laws and the consequences of their violation. She called upon citizens to join in the fight against gender-based violence, emphasizing the need for societal solidarity to create a safe environment for women and girls.

Acknowledging the swift action taken by the Nigeria Police Force, Plateau State Command, in arresting the perpetrator, Dafur urged for a thorough investigation to ensure justice prevails. She also extended appreciation to the Commissioner of Health and the Chief Medical Director of Plateau State Specialist Hospital for their professionalism in providing medical assistance to Mrs. Shagari.

Hon. Dafur reaffirmed the government’s commitment, in collaboration with the Plateau State Gender Commission, to combat gender-based violence relentlessly, declaring solidarity in wresting this societal monster to the ground.
