The Plateau State government has denied an alleged N20,000 cash transfer attributed to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, warning the public against falling for the scam.
Commissioner for Information and Communication, Musa Ibrahim Ashoms, who made the clarification in a statement, said there was no such scheme from the governor or the government and warned the general public against the fake cash transfer.
Ashoms said the scam was perpetrated by fraudsters using the name of Governor Mutfwang with the intent to defraud the gullible general public.
The statement issued by Ashoms reads:
“The Plateau State Government has been made aware of a fraudulent scheme circulating online, claiming to offer a ₦20,000 cash transfer to residents of Plateau State.
“The Plateau State Government is NOT aware of any such program or initiative. There is NO official announcement or press release from the government regarding this alleged cash transfer.
“The link provided is NOT an official government website and is likely a phishing scam.”
The statement also called on the public to watch out for the following warning signs:
“Unsolicited messages or emails promising large sums of money;
Requests for personal information such as bank account details or BVN;
Demands for payment or processing fees to facilitate the transfer.”
The Commissioner also gave tips to the public on what to do to protect themselves against such scams:
“Verify information about government programs or initiatives through official channels only;
Be cautious of unsolicited messages or emails that promise large sums of money;
Report any suspicious activity or messages to the relevant authorities,” the Commissioner said.
