The Plateau State House of Assembly has approved the sum of N5.8 billion to facilitate the conduct of the forthcoming local government elections, scheduled to take place on October 9, 2024.
This approval which was given on Thursday, follows a request by Governor Caleb Mutfwang presented to the House by Speaker Gabriel Dewan, highlighting the absence of budgetary allocation for the elections in the 2024 budget.
Initially, Governor Mutfwang had sought approval for N5.7 billion as a supplementary budget for 2024, however, after a thorough review, the legislators increased the amount to N5.8 billion.
House leader Joseph Bukar emphasized the urgency of the approval, citing PLASIEC’s time constraint in preparing for the elections.
Key Highlights of the Approval Process:
– Increased Security Allocation: The approved sum includes an upward revision of security allocation from N2.7 million to N4.2 million.
– Legislators’ Input: Hon. Kalamu Dal suggested a downward review of the budget, while Hon. Daniel Nanbol advocated for critical review and deliberations.
– PLASIEC’s Role: As the electoral body responsible for conducting credible local government elections, PLASIEC will utilize the approved funds to ensure a smooth electoral process.
With this approval, PLASIEC can now proceed with its preparations for the October 9 polls, ensuring that the electoral process is free, fair, and credible.
