Jos Foodies Club feed over 1,000 prison inmates on World Food Day

The Jos Foodies Club expanded its outreach to feed over 1000 convicts of the Plateau State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service in keeping with the 2023 United Nations World Food Day theme, “Water is life; water is food; leave no one behind.”

Jos Foodies Club, which was founded in 2018, is the largest online food community in all of Northern Nigeria. The food club now has over 75,000 members across Plateau State’s 17 local government areas.

Every year on October 16, the United Nations celebrates World Food Day. Still, the Jos Foodies Club decided to visit the prisoners in the Nigerian correctional facility in Jos on Saturday, October 14, 2023, due to their hectic weekday schedules.

It’s incredible that the 50 or so members of the Jos Foodies Club who visited the prison prepared shawarma, bolognese spaghetti, macaroni, and standard tasty jollof rice for the prisoners.

Mr. Dickson Nanfwang, also known as DJ Shawarma, the convener of the Jos Foodies Club, thanked the workers of the Nigeria Correctional Services (NCS) Plateau State Command for letting them carry out this admirable assignment.

He stated that when we interact with the prisoners, we spend at least 4 hours with them. We got to hear some of their stories, but most of them are pathetic.

“There is a need to look into the correctional system because there are a lot of innocent people that are awaiting trial for as long as 10-15 years before it will be determined if they are guilty or not, and imagine wasting 10-15 years of your life here at the correctional center,” he added.

Additionally, Mr. Nanfwang took advantage of the occasion to thank the whole club for its enormous contribution, in one way or another, to the accomplishment of the UN World Food Day. We are happy to inform you that at least 1,500 prisoners were fed in keeping with the year’s theme.

Mr. Nanfwang also said that the Jos Foodies Club will visit the prisoners without waiting for another World Food Day. We will utilize food as a way to enter the jail and communicate with, educate, encourage, and advise the convicts based on the relationship we have built with the prison administration.

”We endure cooking to feed people.”
