Many residents killed, houses burnt in as herdsmen attack Mangu community

Heavily armed herdsmen have reportedly killed an unspecified number of residents and also burnt several houses and properties in the Maitumbi village of Mangu local government area of Plateau State.

The incident which has been confirmed by the State Police, happened during a clash between the herdsmen and local farmers on Friday and has continued with pockets of attacks.

A resident of the affected community, Ibrahim Musa, said the crisis is still ongoing as hundreds of residents have fled the village.

“I can not give the exact number of people killed but many were killed. More than a hundred houses were burnt,” he said.

The spokesperson for the state police command, DSP Alabo Alfred, in a statement, said that the police and troops of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), have been deployed to the community restore law and order.

“I don’t want to give conflicting figures. Security personnel have been deployed to ensure normalcy in the area.”

Meanwhile, the Director General of Plateau State Peace Building Agency (PPBA), Joseph Lengmang, who condemned the incident said:

“We are deeply saddened by the ugly turn of events in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State where disturbing reports indicate a deteriorating security situation in some parts of the locality that has led to the death of scores of precious human lives and property destroyed.”
