Two suspected phone thieves met their ultimate end on Friday when they were set ablaze by an angry mob in the on Friday in the Kabong community of Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State.
Eyewitnesses report that the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday when the suspects allegedly attacked road users with weapons, stealing phones and other valuables.
A witness revealed that residents, angered by the continuous attacks in the area, mobilized and went after the suspects and while some escaped, two were caught and set on fire by the mob.
“This morning, suspected cultists were robbing people of phones and money. They’ve been terrorising us, especially in the mornings, at noon, and late evenings. Today, the mob caught two of them and set them ablaze,” a resident of the area told journalists.
The Plateau State Police Command also confirmed the incident in a statement by its spokesperson, DSP Alabo Alfred.
According to the statement, “the police received a distress call at 9:20am, about a mob action in the area.”
“Officers were deployed immediately to the scene, where they recovered two charred bodies and two locally made pistols allegedly used by the suspects. The bodies were later deposited at a hospital morgue,” Alfred said.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, who condemned both the criminal activities and the mob’s actions, stressed that jungle justice is unlawful and urged citizens to report suspects to the police for proper investigation and prosecution.
