“On Tuesday, the National Assembly amended section 124 of Nigeria’s constitution, granting full financial and administrative authority to all 774 local government councils.
The section makes a consequence provision for the establishment of local councils as a full third-tier government without undue intervention from the state governments.
The amendment was one of 22 passed by the House of Representatives last week and ratified by the Senate on Tuesday.
The versions of the modification to the constitution that each chamber carried out last month were harmonised by a conference committee.
As of the development, every one of the twenty-three clauses and sections that had been modified by both houses had been ratified by the National Assembly.
The establishment of the State Local Government Service Commission and the Office of Auditor General of Local Government were also accepted in the recently updated document that was to be sent to the state houses of assembly for approval.
Additionally, the National Assembly amended sections 65 and 106 of the 1999 constitution to allow for Independent Candidature in Nigerian elections going forward.
