A few hours after denying rumours of his resignation, the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Gabriel Dewan, has officially resigned from his position, in what has been seen as a major political shakeup in the state and a pivotal moment in the state’s legislative landscape.
Earlier on Wednesday, Dewan had, through his media aide, issued a statement where he stated that he had not resigned contrary to widespread rumours which had made the rounds since late Tuesday.
However, Dewan who is the the only member of the Assembly elected under the Young Progressives Party (YPP), officially resigned from his position in a letter dated July 2, cited a desire to continue serving the state in other capacities.
In the formal letter addressed to the House and the people of Plateau State, Dewan expressed his deep gratitude for the opportunity given to him to serve as the Speaker of the House.
In the resignation letter, Dewan highlighted his efforts at consensus-building, legislative progress, and collaboration with the executive arm under Governor Caleb Mutfwang.
“I leave this office with no regrets, knowing that I gave my best in the service of our state,” Dewan said.
He acknowledged both successes and personal limitations encountered during his tenure while thanking his colleagues, Assembly staff, and citizens for their trust and support, reaffirming his continued commitment to justice, fairness, and the development of Plateau State.
Shortly after the formal resignation of Hon. Dewan, the lawmakers, immediately convened an emergency plenary session at the temporary legislative chambers in the Old Government House, Jos, where Hon. Nanloong Daniel was elected as the new Speaker.
Hon. Daniel who represents Mikang State Constituency and previously served as Majority Leader in the 9th Assembly, received was elected unanimously by all the 24 members who were present during the session.
His nomination was moved by Hon. Nanbol Listick (Langtang North Central) and seconded by Hon. Abdul Yanga (Mangu North East) while the session was presided over by Deputy Speaker, Hon. Gwotta Ajang.
Hon. Daniel’s emergence is expected to usher in a new era of leadership as the Assembly continues its legislative and oversight responsibilities amid evolving political dynamics in the state.
