Not less than 19 people have been confirmed dead with an unspecified number of others following fresh attacks by gunmen in some communities in Mangu and Bokkos and Local Government Areas of Plateau State in the night of Thursday, June 19.
Reports have it that the latest attacks carried out by suspected Fulani militias occurred in the Manja community in Chakfem District of Mangu and Tangur community in Bokkos.
According to residents of the affected communities, the attacks were coordinated invasions as the assailants stormed both communities almost at the same time, unleashing terror on unsuspecting residents.
It was gathered that in Tangur, the attack happened around 9:00pm when most people were preparing to go to bed, while the assault on Chakfem occurred earlier in the evening.
The militias were said to have operated for a while, shooting sporadically and breaking into homes before fleeing the scenes.
Sources in both LGAs confirmed the casualties, stating that six people were killed in Mangu and 13 in Bokkos.
The Director of Culture at the Mwaghavul Development Association and Director of the IDP (Pilot Science) Camp in Mangu, Mathias Ibrahim, who confirmed the Mangu death toll, described the atmosphere in the area as tense.
