Flood Wreaks Havoc in Plateau, Destroying 80+ Homes and Displacing Residents

A devastating flood in Plateau State has destroyed over 80 homes, leaving numerous families displaced and seeking shelter.”

Over 80 households have been destroyed by flood in some communities of Langtang South Local Government Area of Plateau State following a three-day heavy rainfall.

The downpour is said to have started on Friday and lasted through yesterday, leaving members of Sabon Gida communities in confusion and displacing them from their respective homes.

A native of the area, Mr. Solomon Nandul, recounted the ugly development, yesterday, via a telephone interview, saying, “The flood didn’t claim lives but because it was huge, it displaced over 80 households. The displaced persons are staying with neighbours, some are with friends and relatives hoping that the water will recede.”

The Sabon Gida Community Development Association’s Secretary, Mr. Yohanna Nimilam, decried the unfortunate development, noting that it would cost them a lot as most of the farm crops were at the stage of harvest.

He further noted that several victims of the flood were staying with relatives while calling on the government for immediate intervention.

“We appeal to the government and relevant authorities to come to our rescue,” he stated.

The Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Sunday Abdu, when contacted, said a team of emergency experts would be deployed to the affected areas today while measures towards relief materials were being worked out to cushion the effects of the devastation.

“Government heard about the unfortunate development yesterday and we have activated our emergency response already. A team of expert will be deployed to those areas today by the grace of God,” he noted.
