A Nasarawa State High Court sitting in Lafia, the state capital, has sentenced has sentenced former gospel artist, Oluwatimileyin Ajayi, to death by hanging after he was found guilty of murdering a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Salome Adaidu.
He had been charged with one count of culpable homicide contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria and punishable by death.
The presiding judge, Justice Simon Aboki, who handed down the judgment on Thursday, found Ajayi guilty of killing and dismembering Adaidu in a sensational case that shook the country with Nigerians calling for justice for the murdered lady.
The 32-year-old Ajayi was apprehended for the murder of the 24-year-old Adaidu whom he claimed was his girlfriend and he killed her because she was cheating on him.
According to the police then, Ajayi who claimed to be a gospel artist, had killed and dismembered the lady who was serving at the Nicon Insurance in Abuja, when she visited him at his house in the Papalana axis at New Karshi in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
In an earlier court appearance, Ajayi has said he had no regret killing Adaidu because she had been unfaithful to him.
“I have no regrets killing her. She was cheating. She hides most of the things from me most times. I saw her chats with other guys on the phone,” he had said.
Ajayi however, admitted that he acted impulsively by killing the lady.
“It’s not something I planned. It happened on that day, and it happened. Life is reciprocal; that is what I thought. I don’t have any regrets because we were actually compatible,” he had added.
