Colonial Lagos Comes to Life in Esugbayi Eleko as Jide Kosoko Shoots Authentic Lagos Story

Legendary Nigerian filmmaker Prince Jide Kosoko is bringing the vibrant history of colonial Lagos to the silver screen in his upcoming film Esugbayi Eleko.

The movie dives deep into Nigeria’s colonial past, telling the remarkable story of Oba Esugbayi, the Eleko of Eko, whose battle for the preservation of Lagos’ dignity, culture, and freedom in the face of British colonial rule remains a cornerstone of the city’s history.

The film, which has been meticulously researched, draws on historical accuracy to offer an authentic portrayal of Lagos at the turn of the 20th century. With key scenes set in iconic and nostalgic locations across the city, Esugbayi Eleko captures the heart and soul of colonial Lagos, from its bustling markets to its royal palaces. The filmmakers worked closely with leading historians to ensure every detail aligns with the true essence of Lagos’ rich heritage, making the production one of the most significant historical films in Nigerian cinema.

Directed by Adebayo Tijani, Tunde Olaoye, and Tunde Kosoko, Esugbayi Eleko features a powerhouse cast that includes Femi Branch, Yemi Solade, Yinka Quadri, Hassan Taiwo (Ogogo), Sola Kosoko Abina, Bidemi Kosoko, Jumoke Odetola, Yomi Fash Lanso, Alaba Ultimate, Dele Odule, Saidi Balogun, Kola Olaiya, Broda Shaggy, and Odunade Adekola. Each actor brings a unique depth to their characters, embodying the very spirit of the era they portray.
