A couple in Bauchi State have taken the painful decision to cancel their wedding a few days to the D-day after genotype tests revealed they are not compatible genetically.
The couple, Muhammad Ibrahim and Fatima Abdulqadir were supposed to have a blissful wedding fathia when they decided to go for a genotype test which revealed that they were both AS, and decided to call off the ceremony.
In a Facebook post shared on November 21, 2024, Ibrahim announced the painful decision to call off the wedding which was scheduled for November 29, 2024.
In the post, Ibrahim explained that both he and Fatima were AS genotype carriers, a situation that would pose a significant risk for their children with sickle cell disease if they go ahead with the marriage.
Ibrahim, a Zoology graduate from Bauchi State University, disclosed that they discovered their status last month after undergoing tests at two separate hospitals to confirm the results.
“Dear friends and family, it’s with an incredibly heavy heart that I regretfully announce the cancellation of my upcoming wedding,” Ibrahim wrote.
“Due to unforeseen genetic compatibility issues, my partner and I have made the difficult decision to go our separate ways.”
He went on to describe the news as a “devastating shock”, stating that their inability to proceed with the wedding had left him heartbroken.
He added that some family members encouraged him and his fiancée to proceed with their plans, but they declined, knowing the danger they would expose their children to in the future.
He noted that the decision was made out of concern for potential health risks associated with having children who might inherit the sickle cell gene.
What would you do if you are faced with such a situation a few days to your wedding?
