Appeal Court sacks Kano Governor of NNPP

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has been sacked by the Court of Appeal in Abuja.

A three-man panel of the court ruled on Friday that Yusuf of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) was not a member of the party when he was sponsored to run for governor.

According to the Appeal Court, this was a violation of the constitution, rendering his election as Governor of Kano State in March null and void.

As a result, the panel confirmed the decision of the Kano State Election Petition Tribunal, which had earlier fired Yusuf on September 20.

Remembers that INEC declared Yusuf the winner of the March 18, 2023 election after he received 1,019,602 votes to defeat Gawuna, who received 890,705 votes.

The APC, on the other hand, approached the Tribunal, citing alleged electoral irregularities.

The tribunal eventually ruled that Yusuf’s 165,663 votes cast during the election were invalid because they were not signed or stamped by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Following that, the governor’s votes were lowered to 853,939, while those of his All Progressives Congress (APC) opponent, Nasir Ganuwa, stayed at 890,705, and the latter was proclaimed the new governor of Kano State.
